Ducorp's Cockatoo
(Cacatua ducorps)

The Ducorp's Cockatoo is native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. For many years these islands were closed to the export of their birds and thus this species is quite new to U.S. Aviculture. Only a small number were imported into the United States in the late 1980s up until late 1993 when the U.S. stopped the commercial importation of most bird species.

This lovely little cockatoo is slightly larger than the Goffin and has a calm and elegant demeanor. When fully extended, its long crest feathers have the shape of a sail boat's sail.This characteristic, along with the dark blue eye ring and the blue-grey beak, give the Ducorp's a completely different look from the similar Goffin and Bare-Eyed Cockatoos. The Ducorp's is a very beautiful and uncommon bird!

This cockatoo species has a lot of wonderful qualities. As one of the smaller cockatoo species, the Ducorp's is relatively quiet but possesses a very good ability to mimic human speech. Its sweet personality makes it a favorite with families. It has a very steady personality and hand-raised babies make delightful pets! Chicks tend to "whine" for a while after weaning, similar to newly weaned puppies, but this stops as the bird matures.

We obtained our breeding pairs of Ducorp's Cockatoos in 1997 and have been fortunate to raise several babies each year for several years. We were surprised at how sweet-natured and steady the chicks are and have kept an unrelated pair of our youngsters back for future breeding as we wish to work more with this intriguing cockatoo.
