Platypus Overlook, New England National Park, New South Wales

Australia is unlike any other place in that it is like so
many other places
! As one drives along the highway,
one might think "Gee, this looks a lot like Kansas" and then see a kangaroo sitting right beside the road and then think "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!" Drive a little further, and one will see a completely different habitat that looks like somewhere else! This is part of the magic of Australia, there's always something new around each bend of the road!

The edge of the outback, near Coonabarabran, New South Wales

Australia has numerous rivers and seasonal river washes, arid grasslands, and miles and miles of dry Outback in the country's interior.

But dusty roads can quickly lead to more verdant areas, ...

...leading to the landscape of one's dreams like this natural wonder in Lamington National Park in Queensland where where one will find...

...damp subtropical forests thick with staghorn and bird's nest ferns. These damp forests ring with the intriguing calls of the Whipbird. Visit this page again soon for a RealAudio clip of these fascinating birds calling!

There are damp forests filled with tall tree ferns and huge trees with buttressed roots...

Queensland

...and everyone knows about the famous Aussie shrimp!

Where, then are the birds?

They're everywhere! ~ in back yards, city and national parks, beside the highway, in all directions one looks!

Crimson Rosellas will eat from one's hand at O'Reilly's Guesthouse near Lamington National Park, Queensland.
